Steven Spielberg's 1975 thriller, Jaws, tells the story of a police chief trying to protect Amity island from a monstrous great white shark that has been terrorizing the town. Jaws was the first film to be opened nation-wide, and was one of the first films to extensively use television for advertising purposes. Jaws is currently ranked number 48 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Movies list.

Author Thomas Schatz wrote: "If any single film marked the arrival of the New Hollywood, it was Jaws, the Spielberg-directed thriller that recalibrated the profit potential of the Hollywood hit, and redefined its status as a marketable commodity and cultural phenomenon as well. The film brought an emphatic end to Hollywood's five-year recession, while ushering in an era of high-cost, high-tech, high-speed thrillers."
