William Stryon's 1979 novel, Sophie's Choice, is a story about a southern boy who befriends concentration camp survivors Sophie and Nathan Landau. This book was a bestseller in the seventies and was later produced into a film. This novel also won the National Book Award for fiction in 1980.

Ragtime

E. L. Doctorow's 1975 novel, Ragtime, is set in New York City and takes place from approximately 1900 to 1917. This novel was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. This novel was also nominated to receive the Nebula Award for Best Novel and received the National Book Critics Award for fiction.
